Prior
to 1970, analgesics were the only useful form of therapy for partial
symptomatic relief of bone pain related to Paget's disease. Analgesics
and NSAIDs are still used for quick symptomatic relief, but these
drugs do nothing to prevent the progression of disease. NSAIDs may
be effective against associated osteoarthritic pain. Plicamycin (Mithracin®)
and gallium nitrate (Ganite®) are intravenous drugs approved for
treatment of hypercalcemia of malignancy. These agents have been used
in research studies for Paget's disease but are not FDA approved for
this indication. They have been used in clinical practice primarily
for patients resistant to approved agents. |
